Fencing is a sport that requires great speed and focus. One of its three main weapons is the épée.

This sword is the largest and heaviest of the three. It is a thrusting weapon, which means you hit with the tip. Unlike other types of fencing, the entire body is a valid target.

This makes the sport very interesting and sometimes slow. Fencers must watch their whole bodies to avoid being hit. They must also be very accurate to score a point.

Using an épée involves special tools and rules. The blade has a triangular shape with a V-shaped groove called a fuller.

To keep track of hits, fencers use electric scoring. The tip of the sword has a small, movable button. When a fencer hits their opponent with enough force, the button moves. This completes an electrical circuit and sends a signal to a scoring box. The box then makes a sound and shows a light. This tells everyone that a touch was made.

The history of the épée is linked to old ways of dueling.

In the 19th century, people often fought duels for "first blood." This meant the goal was to make a small nick on an opponent. This was often done on the wrist or the hand. Because of this, the épée grew to have a large bell guard. This guard is a shield that protects the hand from being hit. The word épée comes from the Latin word for sword.

There are many specific details about how these weapons are made. An adult épée is a certain size, but smaller versions exist for children.

Most competition weapons weigh much less than 750 grams. The bell guard is a large, rounded shield that fits over the hand. It is much bigger than the guards used for the foil weapon. Fencers can choose different handles, such as a French grip or a pistol grip. They also carry extra wires and weapons just in case something breaks.

Learning épée is a lot like learning a game of strategy. Fencers use a move called a counterattack to respond to an opponent. Since there are no "right-of-way" rules, a quick response can be very effective. Some fencers use special tactics to control the distance between them. A famous fencer named Johan Harmenberg used these ideas to win many gold medals. He showed that smart moves can help a fencer win even against very skilled opponents.
