Eventing is a special sport for horse and rider teams.

It is often called an equestrian triathlon. This is because one horse and one rider must complete three different tests. These tests are dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. The sport began as a test for cavalry riders long ago. It required them to show many different riding skills. Today, people compete in this sport in many lands like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The first part is called dressage. This happens in an enclosed arena.

The horse and rider perform a specific sequence of movements. Judges look for rhythm, balance, and suppleness. Most importantly, they look for how well the horse and rider cooperate. A score from 0 to 10 is given for each movement. A score of 10 is very rare. This phase is the base for all other parts of the sport. It builds the strength needed for jumping later on.

Next comes the cross-country phase. This is a long course held outdoors.

The horse and rider must be brave and trust each other. They jump over 12 to 40 fences depending on their level. These fences can be logs, stone walls, or water.

Riders must also finish within a certain time. If they are too slow, they get penalty points. Some jumps use a frangible pin system. This allows the jump to fall if it is hit hard. This helps keep the horse and rider safe.

In the past, eventing had a "classic format." This included extra parts called roads and tracks. There was also a fast part called steeplechase.

After the fast parts, horses went to a "ten-minute box." This was a mandatory halt to let the horse cool down. A vet would check the horse's heart and breathing. Most modern events now use a "short format." This means they skip the steeplechase and roads and tracks. The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens used this shorter way.

The final test is show jumping.

This takes place in a ring with 12 to 20 fences. It tests if the horse is still fit and obedient. The horse must show athleticism and skill after the hard cross-country phase. If a rider falls, they are eliminated from the competition. If a horse refuses a jump too many times, they are also out. The team with the best total score across all three phases wins. It is a true test of a horse's many talents.
