Athletes must swim, ride a bike, and run to finish. They do these parts one after another in a sequence. The goal is to have the fastest total time. This time includes the moments spent switching between sports. The name comes from two Greek words. "Tri" means three and "athlon" means competition.

To prepare, triathletes work on many different skills. They train for endurance, strength, and speed. This means they do specific workouts for each part. They also do combination workouts to get ready. Some athletes use special gear like a speedsuit to go faster.

They must also do general strength training. This helps their bodies handle the hard work of the race.

Long ago, people held races with three parts in France. One early event in 1901 was called "Les Trois Sports."

That race used a run, a bike, and a canoe. By 1921, the canoe part changed to a swim. Other races appeared in cities like Marseille and Poissy. In 1934, a race in La Rochelle had three separate parts. These included a channel swim and a bike ride.

On September 25, 1974, Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan held the first race. It was called the Mission Bay Triathlon. The race started with a run around a loop. Then, athletes biked twice around Fiesta Island. After that, they swam in the bay. Some people even had to crawl up a steep dirt bank to finish. There were 46 people in that very first race.

Today, the sport is famous all over the world. The Ironman is a very well-known long race in Hawaii.
