Lifesaving (sport)

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lifesaving sport is a group of exciting activities. These sports are based on real lifesaving skills. People use them to stay fit and strong. They also help people learn to save lives in the water. This sport builds both physical and mental skills. It is a way to show how much people can do.

There are two main types of events. Pool events mostly use freestyle swimming. Swimmers might dive to grab a manikin, which is a dummy. They may also swim under obstacles in the water. Some races require swimmers to wear fins. In a line throw, a person throws a rope to a teammate.

Beach events focus on the surf. These are often called surf lifesaving activities. Competitors might race with paddleboards or surf skis. They also do beach sprinting and surfing. One big race is called Oceanman or Oceanwoman. This is a 1,200-metre race with many different parts. It includes swimming, surfing, and more.

The International Life Saving Federation, or ILS, runs this sport. The ILS was started in Paris on 27 March 1910. Every two years, the ILS holds World Championships. Lifesaving is also part of the World Games. In the UK, many clubs compete in these sports. These include Leeds Phoenix and Belfast Olympia.

Many groups work to keep people safe. In Australia, Surf Life Saving Australia works on beach safety. In the UK, the Royal Life Saving Society focuses on pool safety. These groups help people learn important skills. In April 2024, leaders announced a big goal. They want beach lifesaving in the 2032 Summer Olympics. This would be in Brisbane, Australia.
