It does not just look after standard tennis on courts. It also governs wheelchair tennis and beach tennis. The ITF works to keep the sport fair and honest for everyone. They use special programs to stop cheating and bad betting. This helps protect the integrity of the game. In 2026, the group will change its name to World Tennis.

Running a global sport involves many important steps. The ITF makes the official Rules of Tennis. These rules cover how to play and how to score points. They also set rules for coaching during a match. Even the equipment, like rackets and balls, must follow specific rules. The group also manages the Tennis Anti-Doping Program to keep players healthy and fair.

The history of the ITF began a long time ago. It was founded in 1913 as the International Lawn Tennis Federation. A man named Duane Williams was a major force in starting it. The group held its first meeting in Paris, France. At that time, twelve national groups were members. By 1939, the number of member nations grew to 59. In 1977, they dropped the word "Lawn" from their name. This was because many people now played on surfaces other than grass.
