In professional tennis, a Grand Slam is a massive achievement. It happens when a player wins all four major championships in one calendar year.

These four tournaments are known as the Majors. They are the most important annual events in the sport. They offer the most prize money and ranking points. They also attract the biggest crowds and the best players. Players can also aim for a Career Grand Slam. This means winning all four majors at any point in a career. Some even win them in a row across different years. This is called a non-calendar-year Grand Slam.

Each tournament has its own unique style and surface. The Australian Open starts the year in late January. It is played on hard courts in Melbourne.

Men play best of five sets in these matches. Women play best of three sets.

The history of these games goes back a long time. Wimbledon was founded in 1877. The US Open followed in 1881. The French Open became a major in 1925. The Australian Open began in 1905. By 1923, all four were called Official Championships. In 1913, a group called the ILTF held its first meeting. This group helped organize the sport globally. They worked to unify the rules for everyone. Before the Open Era, players were divided into two groups. They were either amateurs or professionals. Amateurs could not accept prize money or pay for teaching. This created many tensions in the sport.

Many famous names are tied to these big wins. Don Budge was the first to win all four in one year in 1938. He did this when players were still amateurs. The term 'Grand Slam' actually comes from the card game contract bridge. It was also used in golf to describe Bobby Jones. In 1930, Jones won four major golf tournaments. In the 1960s, things changed for tennis players. The Open Era began in 1968. This meant pros and amateurs could finally play together. The first open Grand Slam was the French Open in May 1968. This made the tournaments much more competitive.

Grand Slams connect tennis to many other parts of life. They show how hard work leads to great skill. Winning requires staying healthy and focused for many weeks. Sometimes, big events cannot happen. World War II stopped some tournaments from 1940 to 1945. The COVID-19 pandemic even caused Wimbledon to be cancelled in 2020. Even today, players sometimes skip the Australian Open. This is often because of the long travel distance. Despite these hurdles, the dream of a Slam remains. It is a goal that brings the world together to watch.
