It is the top level of professional tennis for women. The Women's Tennis Association organizes all these big events. Many skilled athletes travel the world to play in these matches. They compete to show their talent on a global stage. This tour is the female version of the men's ATP Tour. It is a place where the best players meet to compete.

Tournaments are grouped into different levels of importance.

The four Grand Slam tournaments are the biggest events. There is also the year-ending WTA Finals. The top tier includes WTA 1000 events. In 2024, all WTA 1000 events became mandatory for players. Some of these tournaments offer prize money up to $10 million. Smaller levels include the WTA 500 and WTA 250 events.

The WTA 125 series is the second tier of play. The ITF Women's World Tennis Tour is the third tier.

This professional world began in 1973.

Over many years, the way tournaments are organized has changed. From 2009 to 2021, the tour used names like Premier tournaments. Some of these were Premier Mandatory events. These events often had equal prize money for men and women. In 2021, the tour reorganized its tournament names. Some locations changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, the Beijing tournament was held again in 2023. The Wuhan tournament was also replaced by Guadalajara in 2022 and 2023.

Players earn points to find their place in the world rankings.

The WTA publishes these rankings every single week. Rankings use a system that looks at the last 52 weeks. A player's score comes from her best tournament results. Singles players can count points from up to 18 tournaments. Doubles players can count points from up to 12 tournaments. Players must include the four Grand Slams in their total. They also include mandatory WTA 1000 events to get their rank.

Understanding the tour helps you follow the sport.

You can see how players move up through the tiers. A player might start on the ITF tour. Then she might move to the WTA 125 series. Eventually, she could play in a huge WTA 1000 event. The rankings tell us who the most successful players are. They also use a Universal Tennis Rating based on head-to-head results. This helps everyone see the skill level of every athlete.
