The event happens at Melbourne Park in Victoria, Australia. It usually starts in the middle of January. The tournament lasts for two weeks and ends on a Sunday. It includes many types of play like singles and doubles. There are also matches for juniors and wheelchair players.

Players compete on special hard courts.

For a long time, the tournament used grass courts. In 1988, it switched to a hard court surface. First, they used a green surface called Rebound Ace. From 2008 to 2019, they used a blue surface called Plexicushion. Since 2020, they have used a blue surface called GreenSet.

These hard courts allow for a fast and aggressive style of play. Some big courts, like Rod Laver Arena, have retractable roofs. These roofs close during wet weather or extreme heat. This was the first major tournament to allow indoor play like this.

This event has a very long history. It began in 1905 as the Australasian championships.

The tournament has been held in five different Australian cities. Melbourne has hosted it 66 times. Sydney has hosted it 17 times, and Adelaide 15 times. Brisbane has hosted 7 times, and Perth 3 times. It was even held in two cities in New Zealand.

Traveling to the tournament used to be a hard job. In the early 1900s, players had to travel by ship. A trip from Europe to Australia took about 45 days. The first players arrived by aircraft in November 1946. Because Australia is so far away, many top players missed the event. Even in the 1960s and 1970s, travel was difficult for some. Some players stayed away because the dates were near Christmas. Others stayed away because the prize money was low. Today, players fly from all over the world to compete.
