Two teams of 11 players compete against each other. Each team gets 50 overs to bat. An over is a set of six balls. These big matches can last up to 7 hours. The most famous tournament is the World Cup. It usually happens every four years.

Many people love watching these high-level games.

To start, the captain of each team flips a coin. The winner chooses to bat or bowl first. The first team tries to score as many runs as possible. They keep batting until they are all out or finish their 50 overs. Then, the second team tries to beat that score. If both teams end with the same score, it is a tie.

Each bowler can bowl a maximum of 10 overs. This means a team needs at least five good bowlers. If rain stops the game, rules like the DLS method help decide the result.

ODI cricket started in the late twentieth century. The very first match was on 5 January 1971. It was played between Australia and England. This match happened at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It was a special game because three days of a different match were washed out by rain. Instead of a long game, officials played 40 eight-ball overs per side. Australia won that first game by 5 wickets. In those early days, players wore white kits and used a red ball.

In the late 1970s, Kerry Packer changed how the game looks. He started the World Series Cricket competition. This introduced bright, colored uniforms.

Matches began to be played at night under bright floodlights. They also started using a white ball and dark screens. These changes made cricket better for television. Fans could see more camera angles and hear players through special microphones. By 2001, the old way of using white clothes and red balls ended.

Today, the ICC manages the rankings for all teams. They track the best batsmen and bowlers. Some nations have permanent ODI status, like Sri Lanka and Australia. Other teams earn temporary status through the World Cup Qualifier.

There are also special rules called powerplays. These limit how many fielders can stand far away in the outfield. This helps the batting team score more runs during certain parts of the game. These rules make the matches very exciting to watch.
