In these matches, teams compete for pride on the world stage. Each team gets only one turn to bat, called an innings. A match lasts for a maximum of twenty overs. An over is a set group of balls bowled by a player. Each bowler is limited to just four overs per game. During the first six overs, teams must follow a rule called a mandatory powerplay. This fast style of play helps keep fans interested and engaged.

Learning how the game works helps you see the skill involved. One bowler might take many wickets, which means getting batters out. Another player might score many runs to help their team win. In 2017, the game began using the Decision Review System, or DRS. This is a way to check if a call was correct. The game also has special rules for different situations. For example, the first T20I match in 2005 was not taken very seriously by some. However, a big score by Ricky Ponting helped the new idea survive.

Cricket has a very long history that started in England. People likely played it during the Late Middle Ages. By 1744, a set of official laws was written down. The game became more standard by the late nineteenth century. Later, people tried shorter versions of the game. In 1962, one-day cricket was tested for the first time. In the 1990s, leaders looked for even shorter ways to play. New Zealand tried Cricket Max with ten overs per side. Australia even considered a game called Super 8s.

Many amazing things have happened in T20I history. The first official men's T20I was between Australia and New Zealand on 17 February 2005. In 2007, the first ICC T20 World Cup was held in South Africa. India won that very first big tournament by beating Pakistan. By 2016, more T20I matches were played than one-day matches. As of March 2025, 100 nations appear in the team rankings. In 2019, all 105 members of the ICC could earn T20I status. This allowed many more countries to join the fun.

Players have set incredible records that people still talk about today. Babar Azam holds the record for the most runs scored. Rashid Khan from Afghanistan has the most career wickets with 193. Aaron Finch of Australia holds the highest individual score of 172. He achieved this against Zimbabwe in 2018. In July 2023, Syazrul Idrus from Malaysia had a great bowling game. He took 7 wickets for only 8 runs against China. These players show how much skill is needed to succeed.
