Twenty20 International

sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Twenty20 International, commonly known as T20I, is a fast-paced form of cricket played between international teams. These teams are recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). In this format, each team plays a single innings. A match is limited to a maximum of twenty overs. An over is a set of six legal deliveries bowled by a player. This structure creates a shorter, more intense game than traditional cricket.

The mechanics of a T20I match follow specific rules to maintain its speed. Each bowler is restricted to a maximum of four overs per match. During the first six overs of an innings, teams must participate in a mandatory powerplay. This phase is a specific period of play with special restrictions. To ensure accuracy in calls, the ICC began using the Decision Review System (DRS) in late 2017. The DRS is a technology-based system used to review decisions made by umpires.

Historically, cricket likely began in England during the Late Middle Ages. By 1744, a formal set of laws was established for the game. The sport became more standardized by the late nineteenth century. In 1962, officials began trialing one-day cricket. By 1971, England and Australia played the first One Day International (ODI). In the 1990s, different countries experimented with even shorter formats. New Zealand developed Cricket Max, which used ten eight-ball overs. Australia also considered an eight-a-side contest called "Super 8s." The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) eventually proposed the 20-over format. This version was designed to last approximately three hours.

The first official men's T20I match occurred on 17 February 2005. It was played between Australia and New Zealand. While some observers felt the game was not taken seriously at first, a high score by Ricky Ponting helped the format succeed. In 2007, the ICC held the first T20 World Cup in South Africa. India won this inaugural tournament by defeating Pakistan in the final. Because of this success, the ICC decided to hold these tournaments biannually. This means they occur every two years.

The scale of T20I cricket has grown significantly over time. Initially, only full members of the ICC and selected associate members competed. In April 2018, the ICC announced a major change. From 1 January 2019, all 105 ICC members were granted T20I status. This allowed many more nations to participate in official international rankings. As of March 2025, 100 nations are featured in the ICC T20I team rankings. In 2016, the number of T20I matches played surpassed the number of ODI matches for the first time.

Individual players have set remarkable milestones in the sport. Babar Azam holds the record for the most career runs. Afghanistan's Rashid Khan holds the record for the most career wickets, with 193. In terms of individual scoring, Aaron Finch of Australia holds the highest score of 172, set against Zimbabwe in 2018. Only Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell have scored five T20I centuries. Bowling records also include Syazrul Idrus of Malaysia, who recorded figures of 7/8 against China in 2023.

Team performances show the extreme range of the game. Zimbabwe recorded the highest team total, scoring 344/4 against Gambia. Conversely, the lowest total occurred in 2024 when Nigeria bowled out Ivory Coast for only 7 runs. South Africa achieved the highest successful chase in March 2023 by scoring 259 runs to beat West Indies. These statistics highlight how much the game can change within a single match.

Beyond standard competition, T20I has been used for special purposes. The ICC granted special status to the ICC World XI for the 2017 Independence Cup to help cricket in Pakistan. They also played the Hurricane Relief T20 Challenge in 2018 to raise funds for stadiums damaged by hurricanes. While cricket has appeared in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, T20I inclusion has faced challenges. The ICC has noted that collective support from all members is necessary for Olympic inclusion.
