Test cricket is the most traditional way to play the sport. It is often called the "ultimate test" for any player. This is because it measures skill, endurance, and temperament.

Two teams wear white clothing to represent their countries. A single match can last for up to five days. This makes it one of the longest sports in the world. It is much longer than most other games.

Teams play through up to four innings. This means each team gets two turns to bat. Players must score more runs than the other team. They also use a ball to bowl the opposition out.

A minimum of ninety overs must be bowled each day. This usually takes about six hours of play. If neither team can win, the match ends in a draw. This is a very different way to play than shorter games.

History shows that cricket has been played for a long time. The first official Test match happened in March 1877.

It took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This match was between a Combined Australian XI and James Lillywhite's XI. Lillywhite's team was made of visiting English professionals. Australia won that very first match by 45 runs. England won the second match played between these teams.

Many famous traditions grew from these early games. For example, "The Ashes" began after a tour in 1882.

After Australia won, a newspaper wrote a funny obituary for English cricket. It said the ashes would be taken to Australia. This led to the creation of the famous Ashes urn. Today, twelve full-member teams belong to the International Cricket Council (ICC). These teams compete in the ICC World Test Championship. This league started its first season in 2019.

Rules have changed slowly over the years to help the game. Most matches use a red ball during the daylight. However, some matches are now played at night.

These are called day/night Tests. They use a pink ball so players can see it better. The first day/night match was in November 2015. It was played between Australia and New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval. These changes help more people enjoy watching the sport.
