Lifesaving (sport)

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lifesaving is a group of sports. These sports use skills to save lives. The International Life Saving Federation, or ILS, runs the sport. They started in Paris in 1910. The sport helps people stay fit. It also helps them learn to save lives in the water.

Some events happen in a pool. Swimmers do freestyle races. They may dive to grab a manikin, which is a dummy. They then carry it to the finish line. In an obstacle swim, swimmers go under things in the pool. In a line throw, a person throws a rope to a teammate.

Other events happen at the beach. These are called surf lifesaving events. People can race with paddleboards or surf skis. There is also a race called Oceanman. This is a long race with many parts. It includes swimming and surfing.

Teams compete in big events. The ILS holds World Championships every two years. Lifesaving is also in the World Games. People want to see beach lifesaving in the 2032 Olympics.
