Swimming is a sport where you move through water.

You can swim in a pool or in open water like a lake or sea. People have been swimming for a very long time. Stone Age paintings from 10,000 years ago show people swimming.

In races, swimmers use four main styles. These are butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. In an individual medley, or IM, a swimmer does all four styles in one race.

Some swimmers also use a dolphin kick. This is a move made underwater to go faster.

Competitive swimmers work hard to break records. They often use a plan called tapering. This means they do less work right before a big race. This gives their bodies rest. Some swimmers also shave their hair to move through the water more easily. This helps them reduce drag, which is the force that slows them down.

Swimmers can race in long pools or short pools. Long pools are 50 meters long. Short pools are smaller. Both types of pools are used for great races.
