Many people call it the best event in swimming. It shows who is the most skilled and fast.

In 1922, Johnny Weissmuller was the first man to swim it in under one minute. Today, Pan Zhanle holds the men's world record. He set this record at the Paris 2024 Olympics. For women, Sarah Sjöström holds the world record. She has held it since 2017.

Some swimmers win many times. Dawn Fraser from Australia won three Olympic gold medals. She is the only woman to win this race more than once. Four men have won two Olympic gold medals. These men are Duke Kahanamoku, Johnny Weissmuller, Alexander Popov, and Pieter van den Hoogenband. Alexander Popov also won three world champion titles.

Swimmers work very hard to beat these times. They want to set new world records.

They also try to set new Olympic records.

Every second counts in this race.
