The 100 metre dash is a very fast sprint. It is a famous race in track and field.

Runners start by using starting blocks. They listen for three commands. First, they hear "on your marks." Then they hear "set." This helps them get a good start. Finally, a loud pistol fires. This signal tells them to run.

Sprinters reach their top speed halfway through the race. After that, they begin to slow down. The winner is the first person whose torso crosses the line. A photo finish can help if the race is too close to call.

Fast times are very important. For men, running under 10 seconds is a big goal. Usain Bolt holds the world record at 9.58 seconds. For women, the goal is 11 seconds or less. Florence Griffith-Joyner holds the women's record at 10.49 seconds.

Weather can change the results. A wind from behind helps a runner go faster. A wind from the front can slow them down. High places with thin air also help runners go faster.
