A race is a contest of speed. People try to finish a task in the shortest time. Some races have many parts. These parts are called heats, stages, or legs. A heat is a race run at different times. A stage is a short part of a long course.

There are many ways to race. You can run, swim, or climb. People race with animals like dogs, horses, or even snails. You can use vehicles like cars, boats, or bikes. Some people race with food. A hot dog eating race is a speed challenge. You can even race board games or video games!

Some racers use a special plan. They save their power for the end. This is called a sprint finish. In long races, people may go at a slow pace first. This helps them save energy. Then, they go very fast to reach the finish line. Some call this a finishing kick. This tactic is used in running, cycling, and swimming. It is also used in horse racing. It helps a racer try to win at the very last moment.
