Two teams played against each other. Each team had 12 to 14 players. They had to work as a team to win. Players used their hands to move the ball. They could also touch or hit other players. This made the game very tough.

Most players were men. But some women played too. The goal was to throw the ball over the other team. There were white lines on the ground. One line sat between the teams. Other lines sat behind each team. Teams fought for the ball often. A team lost if they went behind their line. In Sparta, people played a special version. They played it at a big city festival. Five teams played in that game. Each team had 14 players. Later, the Romans took this game. They changed it and called it harpastum. This name means "snatched away." It comes from a word for seizing things. Many ball games grew from these old ways.
