Long ago, people in the Roman Empire played a game called harpastum.

The name means "to snatch." This is because players tried to grab the ball. The ball was small and hard. It was stuffed with feathers.

Teams played to keep the ball on their own side. They had to move with great speed. The game was very tough and physical. Players often fell to the ground. Some writers said it was like wrestling. It was even better than running. This is because it used every part of the body. It also helped people learn strategy.

Crowds would shout as they watched. They yelled things like "Pass it back!" or "Up in the air!" The game was very dusty. It was also quite violent. One person even broke a leg while watching. Even so, people loved the skill of the players. This old game might have helped start other ball games. One game in Italy is still played today.
