This game is very old. Some parts of it started before 2000 BC. It likely began in warm, tropical areas where rubber trees grow.

Players used a ball made of solid natural rubber.

In many versions, players hit the ball with their hips. Other players might use bats, rackets, or even their forearms. Teams usually had two to four people on each side.

Some games were just for fun. Other games were huge, formal events with deep religious meaning.

The game was played on long, narrow courts.

These courts had high walls for the ball to bounce off. Some courts even had stone rings on the walls.

A team could win a big victory by passing the ball through a ring.

Women may have played the game too. Small statues show women wearing player gear. Today, people in Mexico still play a version of this game. They call it ulama.
