Many games use balls. In bocce, you roll a ball near a smaller one. In bowls, you roll a ball toward a target. This game may come from Ancient Rome. Roman soldiers rolled balls near a mark on the ground. Another game is pétanque. It is a type of bowls. Players stand in a circle with both feet on the ground. They throw metal balls near a small wooden ball. This small ball is called a cochonnet.

Some games use throwing. In horseshoes, you toss metal shapes at a stake. You want them to wrap around the stake. In cornhole, you toss bags of corn at a board. The board has a hole in it. You earn points if the bag goes through.

Other games use different tools. Croquet uses a mallet to hit balls through hoops. In ladder toss, you throw balls on strings. They wrap around rungs on a rack. You can play these in a yard or on a sports field.
