People keep the grass very short. They use a lawn mower or grazing animals to do this. Lawns make gardens look pretty.

They are also great for fun games. People play sports like soccer or cricket on them. Some call these grassy areas a pitch or a field.

In the past, lawns were for the very wealthy. It was hard work to keep them short. People had to use tools called scythes to cut the grass by hand. This changed in 1830. A man named Edwin Beard Budding made the first lawn mower. He got his idea from a machine used in a cloth mill.

His first mower was very heavy because it was made of iron. It took many years to make better ones. New ways to make steel helped make mowers lighter. Soon, middle-class families could have lawns in their own backyards.

Today, some people think about the earth when they make lawns. Some lawns use many kinds of plants. These are called tapestry lawns. They help insects like pollinators thrive.
