Monoculture is a way of farming. It means growing only one kind of plant in a field.

Farmers use this way to make work easy. Large machines help them plant and harvest fast. This can help grow more food at a lower cost. But growing just one thing can cause problems. The soil can lose its nutrients, which are the food plants need to grow. This can make the soil weak over time.

When a field has only one crop, pests and diseases can spread very fast. To stop them, farmers often use many pesticides. These are sprays used to kill bugs. These sprays can wash into the water. This can hurt people and animals. It can also harm birds and bees.

Monoculture also happens in forests. People plant many trees of the same kind to make wood. This can replace native forests. Instead of many types of plants, there is only one. Some people use polyculture to help. This means planting many different kinds of crops together. This helps keep the soil and the earth healthy.
