Farmers grow many different plants in the same field. They change the types of plants each year. This is called crop rotation.

It is a smart way to keep soil healthy. If a farmer grows only one crop, it is called monocropping. This can use up all the food in the soil. It also lets pests and weeds grow too fast.

Crop rotation helps solve these problems. Some plants, called legumes, are very helpful. These include beans, peas, and clover. They have tiny bumps on their roots called nodules. These nodules take nitrogen from the air and put it in the dirt. This gives food to the next plants.

In the past, farmers used different systems. Some used two fields. One field grew plants while the other rested. This rest is called being fallow. Later, farmers used three fields. This let them grow more food. In the 1700s, a man named Charles Townshend used four crops. This helped farmers raise animals all year long. Today, many organic farms must use crop rotation. It helps many tiny living things thrive in the soil.
