Crop rotation

Farmers use a clever method called crop rotation to keep their land healthy. Instead of growing just one type of plant, they grow different crops in a sequence.

Growing only one crop is called monocropping. This can be hard on the earth because it uses up specific nutrients. It also helps pests and weeds grow quickly because they have plenty of food. A good rotation helps balance the nutrients in the dirt. It can also help stop weeds from taking over. This makes the farm more resilient to changes.

There are many ways to plan these plant cycles. Some farmers use legumes, which are plants like beans, peas, or clover. These plants have tiny bumps on their roots called nodules. These nodules take nitrogen from the air and turn it into food for the soil.

This is very helpful for the next crop that grows there. Other plants, like grasses and cereals, have deep roots. These roots help hold the soil together to stop erosion. Some farmers even use "green manure." This is when a crop is mixed right into the soil to help it.

People have used different systems for a very long time. In 6000 BC, farmers in the Near East planted legumes and cereals. Later, some used a two-field system. In that way, half the land grew plants while the other half stayed fallow, or rested. In China, farmers used two-field and three-field systems during the Eastern Zhou period. Between the 9th and 11th centuries, farmers in Europe moved to a three-field system. This allowed them to plant two-thirds of their land instead of just half. This change helped provide more nutrition for people.

In the 18th century, a man named Charles Townshend made a four-field system famous.

This sequence used wheat, turnips, barley, and clover. It allowed farmers to raise animals all year long. During the Green Revolution in the mid-20th century, things changed in some parts of the world. Many farmers began using chemical fertilizers like urea to help their crops. However, crop rotation is still a very important rule for organic farming in the United States. To be certified organic, a farm must follow these rules to help biodiversity.

Crop rotation works much like a team. Some plants give help, while others take what they need. For example, the "Three Sisters" is a way of planting corn, beans, and squash together. The corn provides a tall pole for the beans to climb. The beans add nitrogen to the soil for everyone. The squash grows wide leaves to cover the ground and stop weeds. This shows how different plants can work together to stay strong.
