Instead of planting just one thing, farmers plant many species in the same spot at once. This is the opposite of monoculture, which is growing only one type of plant in a field. Polyculture is very important because it helps farmers grow more food from the same piece of land. It also makes farming safer because if one crop fails, others might still grow well. This variety can even give people a much healthier diet.

\n\nThere are many ways to make a polyculture work. In one way called intercropping, two or more crops grow right alongside each other. Some farmers use strip cropping, where they plant long rows of one crop next to rows of another. Other farmers use cover crops, which are plants like grasses that protect the soil. Some even use a living mulch, like the marigold flower, to help stop weeds from growing.

These different methods help the plants, the soil, and the farmers all at once.\n\nPeople have used polyculture for a very long time all over the world. In Mesoamerica, people grew the \"Three Sisters" which are maize, beans, and squash.

This tradition is about 3,000 years old. In China, farmers have grown different cereals together for at least 1,000 years. In Africa, people have used complex mixed cropping for many centuries too. Even today, many farmers in Latin America still grow the Three Sisters together.

\n\nPolyculture works in many different places and ways. In Nigeria, a single farm might have as many as 13 different crops growing at once! These can include rice, cassava, maize, and even different kinds of yams. In Asia, farmers often use rice-fish systems where fish live in the water with the rice.

Some farmers in Indonesia even add ducks and water ferns to their rice paddies. In places like the Himalayas and South America, these systems are still a huge part of how people get food.

\n\nGrowing many plants together also helps the earth stay healthy. Different roots, like long taproots, create tiny holes in the soil for air and water to move through.

This makes the soil stronger and stops it from washing away. Having many types of plants also makes it harder for pests and diseases to spread. If a pest likes one plant, it might get lost among all the other different plants.
