Intercropping

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Intercropping is a clever way to grow many plants in one field. Instead of planting just one thing, farmers grow two or more crops at the same time. This is a form of polyculture. The main goal is to get a bigger yield from the land. This works by using resources that a single crop might not use.

Farmers must plan very carefully to make this work. They look at the soil and the local climate. They also choose different types of plant varieties. It is important that the crops do not fight for space. They should not compete for water or sunlight.

There are many ways to mix these plants together. Mixed intercropping happens when many crops are freely mixed in a space. This method has been used for thousands of years. In medieval England, farmers mixed oats and barley for animal feed. They called this dredge or dredge corn. In France, peasants mixed wheat and rye to make bread. This was known as pain de méteil. Another way is using rows. Row crops are planted in lines wide enough for machines. This style of growing began in Ancient China during the 6th century BC.

Timing is also a very important part of intercropping. Temporal intercropping uses a fast-growing crop and a slow-growing crop. The fast plant is harvested before the slow plant is ready. Relay cropping is a similar idea. The second crop is planted while the first one is still growing. This helps make room for the new plants to develop. Some farmers also use alley cropping. This involves planting strips of crops between rows of trees. The trees can act as windbreaks to protect the plants.

In Central and South America, people use Inga trees for alley cropping. These trees are very helpful for the soil. They are leguminous, which means they fix nitrogen into the soil. This nitrogen is something plants need to grow. A scientist named Mike Hands tested this in Costa Rica. He worked on this in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He found that Inga leaves make a great mulch. This thick layer of leaves protects roots from sun and rain. It also shades the ground to stop weeds.

Plants can even help each other stay healthy. A tall plant can act as a support for climbing plants like black pepper. Some plants can also help manage pests. A trap crop is a plant that attracts bugs away from the main food. A repellent crop can hide the smell of the food. This keeps the pests away. There is also a method called push-pull cropping. This uses both a trap and a repellent at once. While intercropping is helpful, it can be hard to do on a huge scale. Some studies show it does not always increase yields for every farmer.
