There are many ways to do this. Mixed intercropping uses many plants in one space. In old England, farmers mixed oats and barley. This was used for animal feed. Some farmers plant in rows. This makes it easy to use big tools.

Some plants grow fast. Others grow slow. Farmers can plant them at the same time. They can also use trees. This is called alley cropping. Trees can act as windbreaks. They also give shade to the soil. In Central America, people use Inga trees. These trees add nutrients to the soil. They also make mulch to protect roots.

Plants can even help each other. A tall plant can hold up a climbing plant. Some plants can stop weeds from growing. Farmers can also use plants to manage pests. A trap crop can draw bugs away. A repellent crop can hide the smell of the food. This helps keep the crops safe.
