Farmers use a smart way to grow food. It is called the three-field system.

Three Field System

In this way, a village splits its land into three big fields. One field grows wheat or rye in the autumn. The second field grows legumes, like peas or beans. Legumes are plants that help the soil stay healthy. The third field stays fallow. This means it is left unplanted for a year.

During that year, weeds grow in the empty field. Farm animals eat those weeds. Their waste then makes the soil strong again. This helps the ground stay good for new crops.

Farmers move the crops to new fields every year. This system was used in China a long time ago. It later came to Europe between the 9th and 11th centuries. This new way helped farmers grow much more food. It even helped people use horses for farm work. They could grow oats to feed the horses. This change brought more wealth to many people.
