In medieval Europe, people made many new tools. These tools changed how they lived.

Farmers used a heavy plough called a carruca. It had four main parts. A sharp knife cut the top of the dirt. Other blades cut the dirt sideways. A board then curled the soil over. This helped farmers grow more food.

They also used a three-field system. They planted crops in two fields. They left the third field empty. This let the soil rest and stay healthy. This way, they grew much more food than before.

Travel and work also changed.

People began using horseshoes. These metal shoes helped horses walk on rocky ground. Horses could also pull heavier loads on gravel roads. To move water, people used qanats. These were long tunnels that moved water to towns. They used a gentle slope to let gravity pull the water along.
