Farmers use a clever way to grow food. This method is called the three-field system.

It helps people grow more crops than before. This means there is more food for everyone. It also brings more wealth to a village. People can sell the extra food they grow. This system makes the soil stay healthy for a long time.

In this system, a village splits its land into three large fields. One field is planted in the autumn. This field grows winter wheat or rye. The second field grows legumes like peas, lentils, or beans.

The third field is left fallow. Fallow means the field is left unplanted for one year. Each field moves through these three stages over three years. This way, every field is planted for two out of every three years.

This way of farming has a long history. People first used it in China during the Eastern Zhou period. Later, it was used in Europe during the medieval period.

In Europe, this change happened between the 9th and 11th centuries. Before this, farmers used a two-field system. In that older way, half of the land was left unplanted. The three-field system was a big step forward for many lands.

There are many smart details in how this works. Cereal crops take nitrogen away from the ground. Legumes are special because they fix nitrogen in the soil. This acts like a natural fertilizer.

In the fallow field, weeds grow tall. Farm animals graze on these weeds. Their waste then adds nutrients back to the soil. This helps the ground get strong again for the next crop.

New tools helped this system work even better. The moldboard plow helped farmers work the land.

Farmers also began using horses instead of oxen. They could grow oats in the spring to feed the horses. New horse collars and horseshoes helped the animals work. This made farming much faster and more productive. It also meant more nutrition was available for the people.
