Intensive farming is a way to grow huge amounts of food on small pieces of land.

It is also called industrial agriculture or conventional farming. Most of the food in supermarkets comes from these types of farms. This includes many fruits, vegetables, eggs, and dairy products. It also includes most of the meat we eat. These farms focus on getting the most output possible from every acre. This helps feed many people around the world.

Farmers use many different tools to make these farms work. They use machines like tractors, planters, and combines to do hard jobs. They also use special inputs to help plants and animals grow. These inputs include fertilizers to feed the soil. They also use pesticides to stop pests from eating the crops. For animals, they might use antibiotics or special vitamins. Some farmers even use irrigation to give plants the water they need.

This way of farming has a long history. In Britain, farming changed a lot between the 1500s and the mid-1800s. New ideas like the four-field crop rotation helped grow much more food. This helped the population grow and supported the Industrial Revolution. Later, new machines changed everything again. In 1892, the first gasoline-powered tractor was made. By 1923, the International Harvester Farmall became the first all-purpose tractor.

There are many specific ways to manage intensive farms. Some farmers use rotational grazing for their animals.

They move herds to new areas called paddocks so the grass can rest. Other farms use concentrated animal feeding operations. This means raising many animals in a small, enclosed space.

Scientists also found that nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are vital for plants. The Haber-Bosch method was shown in 1909 to help make these nutrients. These tools allow one farmer to manage a very large farm.

While intensive farming produces much food, it also brings new questions. Some people worry about the health of the soil and water. Using too many chemicals can cause soil erosion or make soil less fertile. Because of this, many people are moving toward organic farming. They want to find sustainable ways to farm that protect the earth. This includes using integrated pest management to use fewer chemicals. These new methods try to keep the land healthy for a long time.
