Food is any substance that living things eat to get nutritional support. It provides the energy needed to maintain life and support growth. Most food comes from plants, animals, or fungi. These foods contain essential nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They also provide vitamins and minerals to keep bodies healthy.

Water is found in nearly all foods and can even be defined as food by itself. While water has no food energy, fat is the most energy-dense part of what we eat.

Nature uses a special process called photosynthesis to create food. Plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight to make their own nutrients. They take water and carbon dioxide from the air or soil. Then, they turn these into oxygen and glucose, which is a type of sugar. This glucose acts as an energy reserve for the plant.

Because of this, photosynthetic life forms are the primary source of energy for nearly all life on Earth. They sit at the very bottom of the food web.

In an ecosystem, food moves through a web of interlocking chains. Primary producers, like plants and bacteria, sit at the bottom. Primary consumers are herbivores that eat those plants. Secondary consumers are carnivores that eat the herbivores. Some animals are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals.

At the very top are apex predators. These are animals that have no known predators in their environment. Humans are considered apex predators in this way.

Humans are highly adaptable omnivores who eat many different things. We find sustenance in vegetables, fruits, meat, milk, eggs, and even seaweed. Cereal grains are a very important staple for us. In fact, corn, wheat, and rice make up 87% of all grain production worldwide.

Just over half of the world's crops, about 55 percent, are used to feed humans. The rest is often used for animal feed or biofuels.

Today, much of our food comes from a large industrial food industry. This system uses intensive agriculture to grow crops and complex systems to move them. This process relies heavily on fossil fuels. Because of this, food systems are a major part of climate change. They account for as much as 37% of total greenhouse gas emissions.

Many international agencies work to monitor food safety and security. Groups like the World Food Programme help manage these important global issues.
