A seed drill is a special machine used to plant crops.

It works by placing seeds in the soil at a very specific depth. This is much better than older ways of planting. When seeds are buried correctly, they stay safe from the sun. They also stay safe from birds and other animals that might eat them. The machine places seeds in neat, even rows. This helps every plant get enough sunlight and nutrients from the soil.

How does the machine actually work? First, a farmer prepares the ground by plowing or harrowing it. This makes the soil soft and ready for a good seedbed. The seeds are poured into a large container called a hopper.

Inside the machine, the seeds move down through tubes. Many modern drills use air to push the seeds through plastic tubes. This air is made by a fan powered by the machine. The seeds are then dropped into the ground at the right distance apart. This spacing prevents plants from competing for water and minerals.

People have been finding ways to plant seeds for a very long time. Ancient people in Sumer used single-tube drills. In China, people invented multi-tube iron seed drills in the 2nd century BCE.

These tools helped China support a very large population for thousands of years. Later, in 1701, a man named Jethro Tull made a drill in England. His work helped change how people farmed. Even after his invention, many people still planted seeds by hand for a long time. It took new ways of making metal to make drills common in Europe.

There are many interesting facts about these machines. Some modern seed drills can be as wide as 12 meters!

This allows one farmer to plant many rows at the same time. Using a seed drill can make a harvest eight times larger than planting by hand. In the past, small drills were pulled by a single horse. Today, most farmers use powerful tractors to pull them. Some new machines can even plant seeds directly into the remains of the last crop. This is called direct drilling, and it helps protect the soil.

Before the seed drill, farmers used a method called broadcasting. This meant throwing seeds over a field by hand. It was very hard work and often wasteful. Many seeds landed too shallow or too close together. Because they were not in neat rows, it was also hard to pull out weeds.

With a seed drill, the rows are very uniform. This makes it much easier for farmers to use a hoe to remove weeds. This helps the crops grow even stronger and healthier.
