A planter is a very important tool for a farm.

It is usually towed behind a tractor. The machine sows seeds in straight rows across a field. This helps crops grow in a neat and tidy way. Planters come in many different sizes. Some machines only have one row. The largest planter in the world is the John Deere DB120.

That huge machine has 48 rows. In the United States, rows are often 30 inches apart.

How does a planter work? The machine must place seeds in a precise manner. Older models had a small seed bin for every single row. These bins used plates with special teeth inside. The space between the teeth was just big enough for one seed. This prevented two seeds from falling at once.

Modern planters often use one large central bin. This bin sends seeds out to every row at the same time.

There are different ways to drive the planting parts. Mechanical systems use small tires that touch the ground. When the tractor moves, these tires turn a series of gears. An operator can change these gears to change how many seeds are planted. Hydraulic systems were made to fix problems with the mechanical way. These allow the operator to change settings while they are moving. They can even follow a computer plan for the field.

New technology has changed how fast farmers can work. In 2014, John Deere released the ExactEmerge row unit. This allowed for high-speed planting. Precision Planting later released a system called vDrive. These systems use electric motors to match the speed of the tractor. They use a "dead-drop" method to place seeds. This uses a belt to drop the seed straight into the dirt trench.

This works even when the tractor moves fast.

Farmers also use smart tools to guide their tractors. Some machines use GPS to help with steering. This is very helpful in fields with strange shapes. A system called Case IH AFS uses GPS and computers. It can place seeds within 2 cm of the right spot. This helps the tractor avoid hitting trees or other obstacles. It also stops the machine from planting seeds in the same spot twice. These tools make farming much more accurate.
