It pulls behind a tractor. The tool plants seeds in neat rows. This helps crops like corn and beans grow.

Planters can be small or very large. The biggest one in the world has 48 rows. Most rows in the United States are 30 inches apart.

How do they work? Older planters used small bins for each row. They used plates with teeth to let out seeds. The teeth were just big enough for one seed. This kept the seeds from bunching up.

Modern planters are much smarter. They use GPS to guide the tractor. This helps the machine plant seeds in exact spots. Some systems can place seeds within 2 cm of a spot.

New machines use electric motors to plant fast. They use a "dead-drop" way to place seeds. This means the seed falls straight into the dirt trench. This works even when the tractor moves quickly. This helps farmers work much faster than before.
