A swather is a farm tool.

It cuts crops like hay or small grains. It also makes long rows. These rows are called windrows. Windrows help the plants dry out.

Some swathers have their own engine. Other types are pulled by a tractor. The machine uses blades to cut the stems. These blades can be a sickle bar. They can also be rotating discs. A reel helps the plants fall neatly. A conveyor belt or auger moves the crop. This puts the plants into a neat row. The stems stay above the ground. This is on the stubble left from the cut.

Some machines have rollers. These rollers crimp the stems. Crimping means they crush the stems slightly. This helps the hay dry faster. In some places, people use chemicals to dry crops. This lets big machines called combines harvest them directly. Swathers are still common in Canada and the northern United States.
