A reaper is a farm tool. It cuts crops like wheat when they are ripe.

Long ago, people cut grain by hand. They used small tools like sickles. This was very slow work. People also used scythes to cut grass for hay.

In the 1800s, inventors made machines to help. Obed Hussey made a reaper in 1833. His machine used a saw-like cutter bar. This bar cut plant stalks very well.

Cyrus McCormick also made a famous reaper. His machine was pulled by horses. It had a reel to hold the grain. It also had a divider to separate the plants. For a long time, the two machines competed. Eventually, McCormick used Hussey's better cutter design. This made his machine even better.

Reapers changed how we farm. Later machines became reaper-binders. These tools cut grain and tied it into bunches. Today, we use combine harvesters. These big machines cut, clean, and collect the grain all at once.
