A flail is a tool used on farms.

It helps with threshing. Threshing is the way to separate grain from its husks. A flail has two parts. There is a wooden handle. There is also a thick club called a swingle. A rope or leather strap joins them. This lets the swingle swing freely.

Farmers swing the handle. This makes the swingle hit a pile of grain. The hits loosen the husks. Farmers make flails to fit the grain they harvest. For example, Quebec farmers used specific sizes for wheat. Other grains like rice need different sizes. People who use this tool are called threshers.

Most work is done by machines now. However, some people still use flails for wild rice in Minnesota. These flails must be smooth and round. They cannot be longer than 30 inches.

Flails can also be weapons. Some have iron spikes to make them stronger. A large machine called a mine flail also exists. It sits on a vehicle. It uses heavy chains and steel balls. These spin to hit the ground. This makes land mines go off safely.
