It helps people move loose things. Farmers use it for hay, straw, or leaves. They also use it for manure or compost.

A pitchfork has a long handle. It has two to five thin tines. Tines are the pointy metal prongs at the end. These tines are often made of steel. In the past, people made them from wood or bamboo.

The number of tines matters. Forks with few tines move big things like straw. Forks with many tines move loose things like compost. Do not confuse it with a garden fork. A garden fork is shorter and thicker. It has three or four thick tines. It is made to turn the soil. In Europe, people used pitchforks in the Early Middle Ages. Back then, the tools were all wood. Some people even used them as weapons in battles.
