It helps people move loose materials easily. Farmers use it to pitch hay or straw. It also works well for manure or leaves.

This tool is very important for managing farm waste. It makes a hard job much faster for workers.

This tool works by using long, thin prongs. These prongs are called tines.

Most pitchforks have between two and five tines. The design changes based on the job. Forks with few tines are spread far apart. These are used for bulky things like straw. Forks with many tines are close together. These move loose things like compost or silage.

People have used pitchforks for a very long time. In Europe, they appeared in the Early Middle Ages.

Back then, the tools were made only of wood. Later, makers used materials like bamboo. Today, most tines are made of steel or iron. These metals are strong and last a long time. Some parts are made from a metal alloy too.

There are many different names for this tool. In parts of England, people call it a prong. In Ireland, some call a four-pronged fork a sprong.

You should not confuse it with a garden fork. A garden fork is shorter and much stockier. It has three or four thick tines. It is meant to turn soil, not pitch hay.

We see pitchforks in many famous places. One famous painting is called American Gothic.
