It usually has a long handle made of metal. At the end, the handle branches into several narrow parts called tines. These tines are often slightly curved. You can use a fork to spear food to lift it to your mouth. It also helps you hold food steady while you cut it with a knife.

A carving fork has two prongs to hold meat still while it is sliced. A small pastry fork is used for desserts, and its left tine might be wider to help cut treats. Some forks are very tiny, like a snail fork used to grab food from a shell.

People in the Qijia culture used bone forks around 2400 BC. In Ancient Egypt, people used large forks for cooking.

The Roman Empire used forks made of silver or bronze. In the 16th century BC, a bronze fork was found in a Mycenaean Greek grave. In Persia, bronze forks were made during the 8th or 9th century.

Many people think the personal table fork came from the Byzantine Empire. By the 4th century, they were already in common use there. When a Byzantine princess named Theophanu married an Emperor, people were surprised she used a fork instead of her hands.

In Italy, forks became very popular because of pasta. The three tines were much better for gathering noodles than the long wooden spikes used before. By 1600, forks were used by almost all merchants and upper classes in Italy.

Forks spread to different parts of the world at different times. In Portugal, a Duchess named Beatrice used them around 1450. In England, a man named Thomas Coryat wrote about them in 1611. For a long time, some people in Great Britain thought using a fork was strange. It did not become common in North America until near the American Revolution. By the early 19th century, the design with four tines became very popular.
