People use it to spread butter onto bread or crackers. It can also work for soft cheese or pâté. Sometimes people use it for moulded jelly too. These tools make eating much easier and more enjoyable. They help you add flavor to your food with ease.

There are different ways these knives work. A butter spreader is a small tool for one person. It is usually 5 to 6 inches long. Most spreaders have a rounded point so they do not tear the bread. Some spreaders even have wider blades at the end. There is also a serving butter knife used by others. This knife is often sharp-pointed and has a sabre shape.

History shows us many kinds of butter tools. During the Victorian era, people made many different knife-like items. In the mid-18th century, people used a serving knife to move butter. This knife moved butter from a central dish to a plate. It did not spread butter on bread. This kept the butter in the main dish clean for everyone.

Other tools existed in the past as well. Long ago, butter was kept in chilled earthenware pots. People used a butter pick to pierce the butter and pull it out. By the mid-18th century, these picks were mostly replaced by knives. Some tools even combined a knife and a pick together. At the end of the 19th century, some items became small master butter knives. This happened as fresh fruit became easier to find in the United States.

Today, we use these tools with a bread-and-butter plate. This is often called a B&B plate. You might lay your spreader on this plate in many ways. It can be placed vertically, horizontally, or even diagonally. In the Middle Ages, people used bread called trenchers to hold food. Nowadays, a small dish called a butter pat holds a mound of butter. If you have no spreader, you can use a dinner knife instead.
