People use it to spread butter on bread or crackers. You can also use it for soft cheese or jelly.

In the Victorian era, many types of knives were made. One type was a butter spreader. It is a small knife, about 5 to 6 inches long. Most spreaders have a rounded point. This helps so they do not tear the bread.

Another type was a serving knife. It was used to move butter from a big dish to a plate. People did not use this knife to spread the butter. This kept the butter in the big dish clean.

Long ago, people used a butter pick. This was a tool used to pull butter from a cold pot. Later, people made a knife that was also a pick.

Today, we often use a bread-and-butter plate. This is a small plate for your bread and butter. You might lay your spreader on top of it.
