A swather is a very helpful farm tool.

It is used to harvest hay or small grain crops. In North America, people call it a swather. In Australia, they call it a windrower. This machine cuts the plants and makes windrows. A windrow is a long row of cut crops. These rows help the plants dry out in the sun. This is a big job for farmers.

There are a few ways this machine works. Some swathers have their own engine to move. Other types are pulled by a tractor. The machine uses a sickle bar or rotating discs. These parts cut through the plant stems. A reel helps the cut crop fall neatly. Then, a canvas or an auger conveyor moves the plants. This puts them into a neat windrow. The stems sit on top of the stubble.

Farmers use swathers to help with drying. Some machines have horizontal rollers on them. These rollers crimp the stems of hay crops. Crimping helps the hay dry in less time. For grains, swathers add a step to the harvest. This step gives the grain time to dry out. This is like what old binding machines used to do. It helps the grain be ready for the next step.

Swathing is still very common in some places. You will see it in Canada and the northern United States. In places with long growing seasons, farmers might not need it. They can use combines to harvest standing grain. Some new grain varieties grow and ripen very fast. This means they do not always need swathing. Some farmers use chemicals like glyphosate to dry crops instead.

This machine is even a mascot for a school. Hesston High School in Kansas uses it as a mascot. Hesston is a very important place for these machines. The AGCO Corporation has plants there. They make both swathers and combine harvesters. This shows how important these tools are to farming. You can think of a swather like a giant, moving mower. It does the work of mowing and raking at once.
