Baler

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A baler is a piece of farm machinery used to pack crops.

Farmers use it on cut and raked crops like hay, cotton, or flax straw. The machine squishes these plants into tight bundles called bales. These bales are much easier to handle, move, and store. Baling helps preserve the nutritional value of the plants. This makes the crops better for feeding livestock later on.

Different machines make different shapes of bales. Some make rectangular shapes, while others make cylindrical shapes.

Most modern farms use a round baler.

This machine rolls grass up inside using rubberized belts or fixed rollers. When the bale reaches the right size, the machine wraps it with twine, netting, or wire. This holds the shape of the cylinder. Then, the back of the baler swings open to let the bale out.

Some farmers also use a bale wrapper. This machine wraps the bale in plastic sheeting. This keeps the hay dry or turns damp grass into silage.

Before machines, people cut hay by hand. They used hay forks to make haystacks. These heaps had to be just the right size. If they were too big, they could catch fire. If they were too small, the grass might rot.

In the 1860s, mechanical cutting tools were first made. In 1872, Charles Withington invented a reaper with a knotter to bind hay. Cyrus McCormick sold this machine in 1874. Later, in 1936, Innes made an automatic baler. In 1947, Allis-Chalmers released the Roto-Baler, which was the first production round baler.

Round bales come in many different sizes. Large round balers make bales that are very wide. These can weigh a ton or even more. Small round balers make much lighter bales.

In 1966, Virgil Haverdink and Wesley F. Buchele tested a new large round baler design. Their design was called the "Whale of a Bale." By 1975, fifteen companies in North America were making these large machines. Farmers use special tools to move them safely. A bale spear is a sharp spike used to lift a bale from its center.

A grapple fork can also lift them by clamping down like a hand.

Moving bales can be a hard job. Large round bales can roll away on a slope.

This is why farmers use guard rails or saddle wagons for transport. A saddle wagon has posts to keep the bales from rolling. Silage is another important use for baling. Silage is animal feed made from wet grass. It is wrapped tightly in plastic to keep air out. This allows the grass to ferment.

This process keeps the food good for a long time.
