Hay

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Hay is a very important food for many animals. It is made by cutting and drying grasses or other plants like legumes.

People use it as fodder, which is another word for animal food. It is helpful when animals cannot graze on open pasture. This might happen during a cold winter or a dry drought. It also helps if an animal stays in a barn or stable.

Hay can provide up to 100% of the food a grazing animal needs. Large animals like cattle, horses, and sheep eat it. Small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs eat it too.

Making hay is a careful job with many steps. First, farmers mow the plants in the field. They wait for the plants to reach the best stage of growth. They want to cut them when leaves are full but before seeds are ripe.

Next comes curing, which is the process of drying the plants. Farmers often use the sun to remove moisture. They may use a tool called a tedder to turn the hay over. This helps it dry faster. Then, they rake the hay into long, narrow piles called windrows.

Finally, the hay is gathered into bales or stacks for storage.

Weather plays a huge role in how hay is made. Farmers must watch the sky very closely during the harvest. They need sunny days to dry the cut plants.

If it rains too much, the hay might rot or grow mold in the field. This is a big risk for farmers. Moldy hay can be dangerous because it might make animals sick.

If there is a drought, the plants might be too dry and coarse. This means the hay will have less nutrition for the animals. Farmers often say they must "make hay while the sun shines."

Different animals eat hay in different ways. Cattle and sheep are called ruminants. They have special stomachs that help them digest tough plants.

Cattle can even eat older forage or hay with a little mold. Horses are different because they are nonruminants. They have a single-chambered stomach and a part called a cecum. This makes them more sensitive to changes in their food.

If a horse eats low-quality hay, it might get a "hay belly." This happens when they eat too many empty calories. Colic is a serious illness that can happen to horses.

People have been making hay for a very long time. In the early Roman Empire, workers used a tool called a scythe.

They would cut the grass by hand and dry it in the fields. Later, people began using horse-drawn tools to help with the work. Even today, farmers use big machines like tractors and round balers.

These machines help gather the hay into large, neat shapes. Whether by hand or by machine, hay helps keep animals healthy and fed.
