Silage is a special kind of food for farm animals.

It is made from green plants like grass, clover, or maize. This food is kept for a long time through a process called ensilage. This process uses fermentation to make the plants sour. This sourness helps the food stay good for cattle and sheep. Farmers use it to make sure animals have plenty to eat.

Making silage involves several careful steps. First, farmers harvest crops like oats or rye. They often mow grass when it is in full flower. Next, the plants are shredded into small pieces. The material is spread in layers and packed very tightly. This packing is vital to push out the air.

Without air, a change happens inside the pile. This is called anaerobic fermentation. It turns plant sugars into acids over about two weeks.

People have used these ideas for a long time. In the 1800s, farmers in Germany used a method similar to making sauerkraut. A man named Auguste Goffart wrote a book about this in 1877. In America, Francis Morris prepared the first silage in 1876. Later, Thomas Kirby brought the process to the United Kingdom. A very important scientist named Artturi Ilmari Virtanen helped create modern silage. He won the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1945 for his work.

There are many ways to store this food today. Some farmers use tall tower silos made of wood or concrete. Others make large heaps on the ground. These heaps are covered with plastic sheets and held down by old tires.

Some farmers make silage bales. These are large rolls of grass wrapped tightly in plastic. In some places, these bales look like a long "sausage" on the ground. This keeps the air out so the food stays fresh.

Silage is a lot like other things you might know. It uses the same fermentation ideas as making sauerkraut. It also works like a way to preserve food so it does not spoil. Farmers must be careful with the tools they use. They use forage harvesters and tractors to move the heavy plants. They also use special grippers to move bales without poking holes in the plastic. This careful work helps keep the animals healthy and fed.
