Forage is the food that grazing animals eat to stay healthy.

It mostly consists of plant leaves and stems. Some animals find their meal by grazing directly on pasture. Other plants are cut and carried to the animals as fodder. This can be stored as hay or as silage.

Silage is a way to keep food for later. It can be made from alfalfa, maize, or oats.

Farmers also use crop residue as forage. This includes things like sorghum or sweet potato vines.

There are many ways to collect and use these plants. Some plants are grown as a whole forage crop. These are annual or biennial plants grown just for eating.

Farmers might harvest these crops to feed their livestock. They can also use the leftovers from other crops. This is called crop residue. For example, corn or soybean stalks can be used. Even fruit tree by-products can serve as food. Some people even use aquatic feeds.

History shows that people have used different plants for a long time. Forage has many different names and uses. In the past, the term meant plants eaten directly as pasture. It also meant crop residue or young cereal crops. Today, the word is used more loosely. It now includes plants cut for fodder and carried to animals. People have used horses to transport fodder for many years.

Many different types of plants work as forage. Grasses are very common and include perennial ryegrass.

Other grasses include bermudagrass and orchard grass. Legumes are also very important for animal diets. These include herbaceous legumes like alfalfa or white clover.
