People who run these large areas are called ranchers or cattlemen. Workers who handle the animals are often called cowboys or ranch hands. Some people, called wranglers, work only with horses.

Many ranches are huge, but they can be any size. Some use private land and some use land from the government.

Running a ranch involves many different jobs and steps. If a ranch has irrigated land, it might grow crops too. They grow things like hay and feed grains for the animals.

Guests might go on horseback rides or join cattle drives. Other ranches allow people to come and hunt native wildlife. Most working ranches do not cater to guests every day. They focus on the hard work of raising animals.

The history of ranching goes back hundreds of years. In Spain, sheep raising was very important in the 1100s.

King Alfonso X of Castile even helped create a system for sheep. Because of attacks, some shepherds became "warrior shepherds" on horseback.

In North America, ranching began in the 1500s in Mexico.

Spanish explorers brought cattle and horses to the land. The animals grew very fast because there was so much space.

A large cattle estancia could be about 4,400 acres. These early ranches helped shape how people lived in the Americas.

Today, ranching is a famous part of the "Wild West."
